Like Ducks! : Traditional Music Album Reviews

Christina Smith & Jean Hewson

(Traditional)

Two of Newfoundland’s finest musicians, Christina Smith and Jean Hewson, have formed a duo for the purpose of preserving and performing Newfoundland music. Respectful, yet experimental, the duo breathes new life into traditional songs and tunes. Behind Smith’s fine fiddle and cello and Hewson’s beautiful vocals and complex guitar work, their first release, Like Ducks! (1998), moves smoothly and effortlessly between lively fiddle tunes, haunting ballads, and humorous traditional songs. They even present a fresh and unusual treatment of the classic Hank Williams song “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” This innovative album makes an outstanding purchase. Recommended.
